The Brighton and Oxford Concerts are coming!

Please see the below info and make sure you pencil the relevant date into your diary.  We know you get very busy in the run-up to the Summer holidays!  We’re very excited and will keep you updated with our plans as the weeks pass.  Speak to your tutor as soon as possible about what you/your child might like to perform – they can also advise regarding the exact details we need by the entry deadline.  The concerts may be more spread out this year, so please ensure you mention with your entry whether there are certain times of day that you are unavailable.

The Concerts are so much fun and offer a great incentive to improve.  They are also a perfect opportunity to play your music for friends and family in a beautiful venue.  Complete beginners are very welcome too.

This year we are sponsored by Ackerman Music and raising money for ‘Wishing Well Music for Health’, specifically in relation to their work at the Royal Alex Hospital in Brighton.  ‘Providing interactive music sessions at bedsides and play areas on high dependency, medical and surgical wards. We use voices, acoustic instruments and music technology and encourage as much participation as possible. Musicians use familiar songs and creative improvisation to help children and young people express themselves.’

Young musicians… advice for PARENTS

How much should a young musicians be practising on their new instrument?

We asked some of our SCMT tutors for their opinions… and here they are in brief.  Do you agree?

‘Little and often is key and the quicker you implement it, the more they’ll love to play their instrument.  Children will soon get bored if they’re not getting better!  You don’t want to be paying for someone to repeat what they said the week before, right?’  James

‘Based on a child aged 5 – 7 (complete beginner) I would say 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week.  After a month, make it 6… and increase by a minute each week.  Soon they’ll be practising for 15 mins each day.’  Lucy

‘Just a few minutes aa day at first.  Build it up gradually and they hardly notice.  It’s all about consistency.’  Leo

‘It’s really important that parents sit with young musicians, give them an incentive, praise them afterwards.  They do exactly that with work set from teachers at school… the same applies here.’  Amy

‘If they’re having a bad day, a tired day, a ‘lack of focus’ day… then keep things short, distracting, full of variety.’  Hannah

‘Expecting a child to engage and strive at something brand new without your input isn’t fair.  Ask yourself when you book the lessons, can I commit to their progress too?’  Lily

New Piano lesson testimonials!

‘Fantastic tuition and support. Susanna is nothing short of amazing in linking up tutors with students, building a sense of community, keeping everyone up to date with guidance and always encouraging and celebrating the many successes.  Sam, our piano teacher for the last 4 years, has seen my daughter through 5 grades, with accolades. It is absolutely not just about the grades and he has encouraged exploration and enjoyment of different musical styles and genres.  He is extremely accomplished with a disarmingly light touch that belies the rigour and polish he seeks to instil in his students.  Above all, his positivity and enthusiasm as well as flexibility have been so important especially throughout the last 18 months and his online lessons have matched the quality of in-person teaching.’

Susanna Cassam blog – listening to music at home. NEW…

Susanna Cassam blog.  NEW

Why is it so important to play music to your children at home?

It’s obvious really.  But sometimes we need reminding HOW important because in all the chaos of family life, we simply forget to press play… or at least forget to really appreciate the music.

These are the most important and benefits that should leave you running for a playlist:

CONNECTION – music at home envelopes you and you children in a bubble of joy

QUIETENING OF THE MIND – it stills them, and feeds their ability to be calm

DISTRACTION FROM STRUGGLES – an immediate solution, so add it to your parenting tools!

A CHANGE OF FOCUS – similar to the above, but great when they are holding on to a negative vibe at home

CREATING GOOD HABITS – they will carry it with them… ‘I remember we always had music on in the kitchen’ is a common one

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION – it can give children permission to unleash their true feelings, to be uplifted, or relax; to be their true selves

EDUCATION – listening to music ignites ALL AREAS of a child’s development (we’ll be looking at this more in the next post, but how amazing is that!)

‘Listening to music helps children UNDERSTAND music, gain opinions about music, crave more and more music!  They’ll discover what they love, what makes their heart sing, what keeps them calm, what inspires them, what intrigues them… and what they aspire to!  If children listen to enough different types of music on a regular basis, they will choose to learn an instrument and be motivated to constantly improve.  They will work hard to imitate those musicians they admire and they’ll also love the connection it brings to everyone at home.  Music brings a family together and wraps you all up in its comfort and energy.’

Parents of young musicians (advice blog!)

We’re been spending some time thinking about how we can help you directly with championing your child as they learn and love their music.  We’ll be sharing our thoughts in a new blog offering advice to parents of young musicians … http://www.cassam.co.uk

Children are so, so different.  I didn’t realise quite how different until I had my own.  These differences affect the ways they learn best in every aspect of their lives, so helping them along the way as a parent is a challenge individual to you!  However, when it come to learning a musical instrument, there are many things you can do to ensure that they get the best out of their lessons, progress fast, want to practise at home, don’t lose interest… and enjoy themselves regardless of their strengths and challenges.  Music has an enormously positive impact on EVERY child and we can’t wait to help you access their enthusiasm when the tutor has left the room.  We’ll be looking at:

How much practise for my child, and when

How can I help to make practise fun?!

Encouraging a child to perform for others

The importance of listening to music at home

Music groups and orchestras for young children

Targeted help for children struggling

Music lessons for children with additional educational needs

Music exams… or not?  And if not, providing other incentives

Choosing exactly the right teacher for your child

We’ll be posting weekly, firstly focusing on The Importance of listening to music at home.

Please do keep checking in to read the latest from our new blog offering advice to parents of young musicians.

To buy or to hire a musical instrument?

To buy or to hire a musical instrument… that is the question 🤔

Frequently parents tell us that they would rather not invest in an instrument for their child before knowing if they’ll commit to their music lessons 👦❤️🎻

Will they enjoy it? Are they too young? How do you know you’re making the right decision at the right time?!  http://www.cassam.co.uk

🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

GOOD NEWS! Nowadays you can hire a beginner’s instrument in the short-term with an option to purchase afterwards (minus the money you’ve invested in rental). No pressure, no mammoth spend, no big decisions too early on 🙌

Our friends at Ackerman Music on Queens Road, Brighton and Portland Road, Hove are experts with all things hire/purchase. They have a huge range of instruments to fit all ages, sizes, budgets, timescales etc. If you visit them in-store they’ll help you choose and can also advise regarding cleaning, storing, insurance, makes & models (and noise reduction if that’s a concern 😂🥁🎺🎶)

FACE TO FACE MUSIC EXAMS!

FACE TO FACE MUSIC EXAMS!

When we’re tested… 📝

It starts when we’re so little; and it doesn’t stop. Our patience, our nerve, our determination, our kindness, our beliefs, our motivation, our ability to just let things be. Tested, tested, tested 😬

The lessons we learn as we go through life can help us rationalise and calm our nerves, and we can teach these lessons to our children, adapting them to the different challenges they might face👌

The pointers below are great for assisting in overcoming a child’s nerves before taking a music exam, but they also apply to any sort of performance! Any day where you’re asked to prepare yourself and be brave in front of others 👊🏼

LET’S GO! 🤩

Focus on the outcome ➡️. What can you do straight afterwards. An icecream? A movie?

Remember it will be over quickly ➡️. Most music performance exams are less that 20 mins!

Put it in perspective ➡️. It really is a tiny part of the day.

Practise just beforehand ➡️. Literally JUST before, so that they’re merely repeating the performance in front of examiner, fully warmed up.

Look after your body ➡️. Eat. Drink lots of water. Flex your fingers.

Sit still and quiet for a while ➡️. Lots of deep breaths can help. Empty your mind of the worry for a few minutes if you can. It doesn’t matter if you can’t keep it up for long 🙂

Be very organised ➡️. This can really help! Small surprises and changes can kick-start the nerves, especially for first-time performers.

Work as a team ➡️. Be there for them. Show solid support. Make your child feel safe and supported, in control of what happens from the moment they arrive at the exam venue.

Face to face music exams are back on!🎉❤️🎶

Susanna is extremely organised, super friendly and very knowledgeable about teaching music and all it entails. She’s super easy to work for and is highly committed to Music education. She has a big range of teachers and ensures students progress and keeps good relationships with parents and teachers. She also puts on great concerts which is an important part of music training.”  Phil, piano teacher, Brighton

I have been teaching for Susanna for over 3 years now and she has continued to be supportive and informative, and more importantly very friendly and down to earth. She has found me lovely clients to teach for, who I have built up a very good relationship with over time. Susanna works very hard in organising and hosting two concerts a year for all pupils to showcase their hard work, which also provides us valuable opportunities to meet other tutors and chat about our experiences, and generally get to know everyone at SCMT better. I’m sure I will stay with Susanna for a long time to come, being a self employed piano teacher it is nice to feel part of a big network of tutors, and even more so now that SCMT is expanding to other cities.”  Laura, piano teacher, Brighton

I have been teaching for SCMT for over 10 years and Susanna has always been extremely professional, supportive and friendly. She is very committed to providing good quality music education and ensuring that tutors, parents and pupils are all happy with how lessons are progressing The summer and Christmas concerts she organises every year are always a great success and my pupils have really enjoyed taking part. Parents have mentioned to me that they really appreciate their children having this opportunity to perform in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere outside of a school setting. Music lessons have been disrupted for an entire year now and the lack of performance opportunities has been heartbreaking for so many.  We’re hoping that things will now only get better.  The concerts are booked for June, spring is coming and it’s time to make music in front of each other again, rather than from behind a screen…  See you very soon (face to face music lessons from 8th March)!

This testimonial really warmed us up today… for Anthony, an SCMT piano teacher.

Anthony has boundless enthusiasm for music and for exciting his students on their musical journey. Martha adores him and looks forward to her lessons because she knows they will be fun, her progress will be praised and she will be given things to work on before the next week. Now Martha is a very busy 8 year old and doesn’t always practise as much as she should but she never wants to disappoint Anthony. He has a lovely rapport with Martha. They laugh a lot – something that is crucial when you’re having a go at something you find quite tricky. She likes the way he will be inventive and accompanies her playing with a funky flair – bringing the music alive and making the likes of ‘Horsey Horsey’ cool and grown up. The lessons are always weekly and Anthony does this best to reschedule any missed ones. Friendly, polite and professional?! In bucket loads!”  http://www.cassam.co.uk/testimonials

CONCERTS AND EVENTS

Children’s Concerts Brighton

SCMT has unfortunately had to cancel full weekends of Children’s Concerts in Brighton and Oxford during 2020 because of COVID19.

However, we’re now delighted to announce that we’re committing to three weekends of children’s concerts in 2021… during March, June and December.  We’re expecting to raise a huge amount of money for local charities, and have numerous concerts dedicated to beginner students.  We’ll hear a record-breaking number of children performing their music for friends and family.  We’ve had so much lovely feedback from parents in relation to music lessons this year which have carried on regardless of the difficulties, including less opportunities to perform.  From face to face lessons, then online… and back again;  it’s been a journey.

‘The concerts organised every year are always a great success and my pupils have really enjoyed taking part. Parents have mentioned to me that they really appreciate their children having this opportunity to perform in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere outside of a school setting.’ Andrea, SCMT piano teacher

‘Susanna works very hard in organising and hosting two children’s concerts a year for all pupils to showcase their hard work, which also provides us valuable opportunities to meet other tutors and chat about our experiences, and generally get to know everyone at SCMT better.’  Laura, SCMT violin teacher

‘SCMT puts on such great children’s concerts which is a really important part of music training.’  Amanda, parent

Please have a look at our testimonials page at www.cassam.co.uk/testimonials/ where you’ll find numerous parents and tutors commenting on previous children’s concert successes.  Performance is so important to a child’s musical journey; confidence, an incentive to perform and the experience of loud applause from friends and family.  Music lives to be let out! https://www.instagram.com/scmtmusictuition/

Fingers crossed for the rest of 2020… and we’ll see you all soon!

Music lessons and COVID19. Returning to lessons…

Returning to face to face music lessons after the COVID19 lockdown.  Are you and your children ready, willing and excited?

Having spoken to many parents over the last few days, it’s become clear that children have as many queries and concerns as they do!  Of a different nature though.  As parents, we are generally quite good at collating a list of questions, and in response it doesn’t take SCMT long as an organisation to be very specific regarding what is allowed, possible or encouraged (our next set of guidelines goes out to clients next week and if you’re new to us all of your queries will be answered when you enquire).

Generally speaking, if a child was enjoying their lessons before the virus, whether they continued online or had a long break, they’ll be delighted at things returning to normal.  There are some not so sure, both specifically regarding their music lessons and returning to a ‘social’ life generally.  Parents have voiced the following relating to children restarting lessons (permission granted):

She hasn’t seen Luke for 6 months, so much has happened.  She’s nervous to start again and hasn’t really practised…

Arrange a short phone-call or video-chat between your tutor and your child to chat through what happens next for your Music lessons and COVID19.  Make it light-hearted and straightforward.  Be honest about progress and practise straight away so that expectations don’t add to the stress of the changes.

Ella is worried about September.  She’s actually really enjoyed online lessons, but I think she achieves far more when she sees Laura face to face…

Children almost always achieve more in face to face lessons.  They are constantly engaged, present, and conscious of impressing their teacher.  Suggest a single face to face lesson to see how it goes, and pre-warn the tutor, so that they can ensure the lesson offers all it can in persuading your child that this is a better way.

As a family we’re wondering whether to wait longer… just to see how things pan out.  If we start again then have to stop it’ll add more chaos to her progress.

Every family sees things differently, and concerns like this aren’t rare.  Remember though that if face to face lessons have to stop gain, you can simply swop to online, for a period which would hopefully be much shorter than the six months endured previously.

Can we see how things go, and return to online lessons if Adam prefers it?  He’s nervous about returning to school as well as rules generally when face to face piano lessons start again.

Talk through any routines/rules that apply to COVID before the tutors arrives, so nothing is a surprise and the changes are small and easy to follow.  Remind them that this is a normal, existing arrangement and that they/yourself/the teacher can make decisions as a team on a weekly basis.

SCMT Music Tuition will treat each family with care, assuming all family circumstances unique until the COVID crisis is truly over.  Please get in touch with us anytime to chat things through.  In most instances, you can alternate between online and face to face lessons as you feel appropriate.  https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus

Where to get piano lessons…

Where to get piano lessons.  Making the right choice for your child…

There are many considerations to take into account when wondering where to get piano lessons for your child.  Endless options too it would seem.  I personally have two sons aged five and seven and when it comes to reaching out and booking them into the care of a stranger, I feel like my list of queries and concerns is mind-boggling, especially at the moment.  But it needn’t be, you just need to know exactly what to ask.  Here are some pointers for you, I hope they help.  Remember, if you are enquiring directly to an established, experienced music teacher or school, they will know all the answers and re-assure you straight away.  They’ll be confident in their responses and understand your concerns as a parent:

The music teacher/school.  Their basic information and background:

Is there a landline number as well as a mobile?

Is there a local business address?

Is there someone named, that is running the organisation, that you can speak to directly over the phone if needed?

Do they have a long and reassuring history of testimonials online?

Are they highly recommended?

Are their claims backed up… exam passes, number of pupils etc?

Other than your obvious queries (…’do you have someone suitable, locally, with these days free’) ask the following of a school:

How much are the lessons, does it vary between tutors, instruments and areas?

Can I meet the tutor in person for a free trial before committing to anything?

Do your tutors have a music degree?

Are they ALL have grade 8 on their instruments?

Are they mentored in exam preparation for ABRSM and Trinity exam boards?

Do they offer additional services (concerts, written reports etc)?

Are your tutors’ lessons and teaching styles overseen and monitored?

Do you thoroughly vet the tutors and gain references?

And for individuals you come across:

How much are the lessons?

Can I meet you in person before committing?

Do you have a music degree?

Are you grade 8 on your instrument?

Do you have music theory qualifications?

How long have you been teaching for?

What is your experience of teaching children?

Are you trained in exam preparation for ABRSM and Trinity syllabuses?

Do you offer additional services (concerts, written reports etc)?

Do you have an enhanced, child workforce DBS and public liability insurance?

So, where to get piano lessons!  You may only have concerns regarding some of the above, but rest assured, any experienced, genuine teacher will be not only used to it, but flattered that you’ve asked, that you’re not a time-waster… and they’ll be eager to answer your questions in full.  You could call us to test us out!
