Jinny – piano and violin teacher

Jinny is a piano, violin and music theory teacher with over thirty years’ experience working alongside
children, young people and adults.
Following completion of a foundation course at Leeds College of Music she graduated from Bretton Hall
College, University of Leeds, with a B.Ed. (Hons) in Education and Music (1989).  Since then she has
taught as a private music tutor, a music teacher and a generalist class teacher in many schools across
Sussex.
As an instrumental teacher she has worked for two Music Services and is currently teaching in a local
Prep School. She has experience as the lead Music teacher in both Primary and Secondary Music
departments.
With 100% pass rate for students wishing to take ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall examinations, with many
achieving merits and distinctions, Jinny has also successfully prepared students for the performance
elements of their GCSE Music exams.
She strongly believes that everyone should be given the opportunity to participate in music activities
and has an inclusive approach, incorporating different teaching strategies and genres into lessons
enabling students to draw on their strengths and different learning styles. She has experience teaching
children and young people with a range of learning needs including SEMH, ADHD, dyslexia, ODD, OCD,
speech and language, MLD and students with neurodivergence in specialist Speech and Language
settings and a specialist SEMH Secondary residential school.
Performing plays a large part in Jinny’s life. She is a founder member of Sussex Symphony Orchestra
(1st violin). She sings in the Brighton Festival Chorus where she has performed with leading orchestras,
soloists and conductors in numerous venues, including regular appearances at the Royal Albert Hall. In
addition to a degree where violin and piano were joint first studies she holds Grade 8 in both viola and
music theory.
Jinny gained her MA in Music Education from the IOE, University of London (ranked Number 1 for
Education for a decade in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject). Jinny is thrilled to have
studied alongside those at the forefront of educational research and to have had the opportunity to
enhance her knowledge and pedagogical practices in light of this.
