Katherine is a violin teacher in Oxford. A classically trained violinist since the age of five, Katherine has achieved her ABRSM Diploma in Violin Performance. She is currently working towards a BA (Hons) in Music at Oxford Brookes University and received the faculty Performance Bursary for achieving the top mark in class for Solo Performance in her first year.
Having lived and studied in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and now Oxford, she has gathered over 15 years of ensemble experience and several leadership positions with orchestras and chamber groups internationally. She has also enjoyed the opportunity to perform with orchestras in iconic venues such as the Shanghai Oriental Performing Arts Centre, the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Esplanade performing arts centre in Singapore as both leader and soloist.
Katherine is currently Concertmaster of the Oxford Brookes University Orchestra. She has furthered developed her musical skills by attending Austrian Master Classes twice, a week-long summer masterclass course in Austria studying solo violin performance, stage training as well as string quartet performing with accomplished string professors such as Sabine Nova, David Frühwirth, Andreas Pözlberger and Peter Langgartner.
In addition, Katherine enjoys playing the drums, guitar and piano, and is also currently the keyboardist for Oxford-based funk/pop cover band Moonlight !n Blue.
Whether students aspire to progress on the violin through musical examinations (ie. ABRSM), continue developing their skills or learn for fun, Katherine aims to carefully tailor lessons to suit individuals in the hopes of guiding each student towards fulfilling their personal goals as a musician.
“I have been so fortunate to have had incredible music teachers and mentors throughout my musical career who have developed my skills and shaped my worldview, with and without music. Without them I would not have the confidence to pursue music and I hope that through teaching I can pass on what my experiences have taught me and instill that same confidence and enthusiasm in aspiring musicians.”
Katherine is fluent in English as well as Chinese and Cantonese.
