Pre-School Music Programmes encompass a wide range of activities and skills required within the creative development music guidelines set up under the early learning goals of the National Curriculum.

Learning objectives:

Pre-School Music sessions are all written and organised with the following objectives:

  • Introductions to musical sounds from around the world.
  • Recognising sounds, exploring sounds, changing sounds.
  • Learning song and associated movement from memory.
  • Recognising repeated sounds and sound patterns.
  • Investigations of simple musical ideas.

Session Information

A music specialist runs the session and is accompanied by a qualified helper. A 2 hour booking is broken down into small group sessions.

Example:  30 children. Groups of 6 children. 5 x 20 minute sessions.

(The teachers require no additional help from staff employed by the nursery).

"LEARNING IN SMALL GROUPS PROVIDES CHILDREN WITH A MORE INTIMATE ENVIRONMENT, INSTILLING THE CONFIDENCE TO JOIN IN AND PROVIDES FAR MORE INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION FROM THE TEAHCER. THERE ARE TERMLY WHOLE CLASS SESSIONS ORGANISED WHERE SKILLS LEARNED ARE REHEARSED AS A CLASS AND PERFORMED TO PARENTS."

Example session:

MUSICAL INTRODUCTIONS:

Music examples from around the world are played to the children. Examples are accompanied with large pictures for reference and costume parts are provided for children to try. The children then replicate the sounds they hear using simple rhythms, their voices and percussion instruments.

SOUND RECORDING:

Children record a sound (with microphone) over a pre-recorded loop. They may choose clapping, flicking, blowing, whispering. The sound is rehearsed as a beat over the music. The children then listen back to their own recording.

SONGTIME:

A recorded song is played for the children. Various sounds that accompany the music are introduced to the children who then learn them in sequence. Once rehearsed, the children then accompany the music with their sounds in the correct order. Images are used to accompany the sound choices.

All sound/recording equipment accompanies the teacher to the nursery, alongside a large box of percussion for general use during sessions.
