The services below are all available within Private Music Tuition. Lessons are taught from a fully equipped music room in Brighton, within your own home, or at school. There is a choice of individual tuition or small group training.

A starter pack containing manuscript paper, a relevant music book, progress diary and worksheets is provided free of charge when you start your lessons.

Children can be taught from beginners level, building foundation skills over the course of the first year in their chosen instruments. From this point there is the option to refine and improve skills, take music exams, or train in a specific style. Tutors are open-minded as to particular teaching methods parents may request with regards to their child’s training.

Lessons last for 45 minutes or an hour depending on your child's age and the instrument they are learning. Our tutors can also help to develop your child's knowledge of music theory through the use of flash cards, puzzles and fun games. Progress is monitored and recorded using a child/teacher diary. A commitment to learning running alongside exciting teaching methods will result in the child appreciating, understanding and most of all, enjoying the music they play.

Piano – Classical, Jazz, Contemporary

Piano lessons can incorporate any of the above styles depending on parental/pupil choice and ability. ABRSM exams are available but not essential to progression. In addition, children are encouraged to compose their own music and record performances.

Guitar

Guitar is taught 1 on 1 or in small groups, and can incorporate various styles and genres depending on parent/pupil decisions. There is the option of Voice Coaching running alongside these lessons and finished songs are often recorded.

Voice coaching/Performance

Taught by an experienced singer and actor, these sessions instill self-confidence and boost self-esteem. Focusing on ‘Stage’ performance, children are taught the skills essential to a convincing vocal display.

Music Theory/Composition

Taught alongside many of the other service options, Theory and Composition are essential to progression with any instrument. Using computer software, ABRSM materials, CD roms and flashcards, children are taught how music ‘works’ and how to compose their own.

Music Technology

Music production on Apple Mac using Garageband (a music production based software package used in schools), Cubase and Sibelius. Recording real instruments, building arrangements in various styles and sharing finished songs.

Cello / Violin

Strings are taught from beginners level to children aged 7 years and upwards. Individual and small group training is available, with emphasis placed on the child understanding and appreciating Classical music whilst they learn to play.

Clarinet, Saxophone, Flute

Wind instruments are taught in either a Classical or Jazz style, or a combination of the two. Individual or group training is available with the option of ABRSM Music Medals exams (small group/ensemble assessment).

Music Therapy

Jacqui AtwoodMusic therapy enables children to express themselves, relate to their feelings and interact more easily. During the session improvised, interactive music is created by both the child and the therapist. A child does not need any musical or instrumental training in order for the sessions to be beneficial. All the instruments are provided, both tuned and percussive, and parents are invited to observe the first session.

Music therapy is relevant to children with the following conditions:

  • Communication disorders
  • Mental health problems
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Emotional problems
  • Learning disabilities
  • Physical difficulties

Edward was 6 years old when he was first introduced to music therapy. He has cerebral Palsy and can neither walk nor talk:

Music therapy has given him self-confidence and a definite sense of achievement. It enables him to relate to the world more effectively. Strumming the guitar is his favourite activity – Not only does it make him relax, it's really improved his control and co-ordination’. (Parent)
